Born in Hong Kong, Chiang began his musical education at the age of four with piano, later with composition and cello as well. Since the age of 13, Chiang has been active on stage as concert pianist. At the age of 16, he received the Fellowship Diploma of Trinity College in London, later Bachelor of Music Degree from Baylor University, USA and “Magister Artium” with distinction from University for Music and Performing Arts of Vienna. His mentors were among International renowned conductors such as Seiji Ozawa and Leopold Hager.
In 2007, Chiang won First Prize at the Fourth International Competition of Young Conductors “Lovro von Matacic” in Zagreb, Croatia. Other Awards included the “Bärenreiter Urtext Preis” at the 3rd International Competition for Young Choir Directors (Vienna), the “Performing Arts Showcase Winner” of the Golden Key International Honor Society (USA), “Würdigungspreis” from the University for Music and Performing Arts of Vienna in recognition of his outstanding musical achievement, the Tokyo Foundation Music Scholarship (Japan), and the Presser Foundation Music Award (USA).
Chiang appeared first as conductor when he founded the Ensemble Amadeus in Texas in 2000. From 2004 to 2006, he was musical assistant and conductor of numerous opera productions at the Schloßtheater Schönbrunn in Vienna. Since 2007, Chiang appeared regularly as assistant conductor of opera productions at Theater Lübeck and the Eutin Festival in Germany. Other music festivals he has taken part included also Rohm Music Festival in Kyoto, Japan and the Macau International Music Festival. He is at the moment the Principal Guest Conductor of the Hong Kong Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra. Other Orchestras he has worked with included Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna, La Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, Lübeck Philharmonic, Zagreb Philharmonic, Oradea Philharmonic and Hong Kong Sinfonietta; in major venues such as the Golden Hall of Musikverein in Vienna. Chiang was also featured on the front cover of the international opera magazine Orpheus in 2009. Beginning 2009/10 Season, he is appointed “Kapellmeister” at Theater Freiburg.
His recent success at the Festival Internacional de las Artes de Castilla y León in Spain with interpretation of music by Ligeti and Varese has brought international attention, regarding him as specialist in music of such.
